A Look at Texting and What It’s Doing to our Teens

Michael Hausauer, a psychotherapist in Oakland, Calif., said teenagers had a “terrific interest in knowing what’s going on in the lives of their peers, coupled with a terrific anxiety about being out of the loop.” For that reason, he said, the rapid rise in texting has potential for great benefit and great harm.
Here’s the article from the New York Times.

Oh my goodness, I read that article in the NYTimes and was astounded that the avg teenager sends over 2200 text messages every month. Not to mention that people sleep with their phones vibrating every five seconds. Our society has grown too attached to our phones. I definitely enjoy reading my email on my phone but I do not need it vibrating at 3am in the morning (which is why I actually turn it off). I also am amazed at how wildly different the lives of teenagers are now, compared to when I was growing up. At age 13, I did not have an expensive phone (or a phone at all) like the iPhone. I don’t know why parents are just giving their kids these expensive gadgets - what happened to the values learned by getting a job, making your own money to buy the things you want to buy?
